LG G Flex 2 CES 2015

LG took the opportunity to showcase its unique G Flex during CES 2014 last year, though it was actually released earlier in November 2013. During CES 2015 early last month, it unveiled the successor, aptly-named the LG G Flex 2.

G Flex 2 retains the same signature curved display the original does. It is not like Samsung’s Galaxy Nexus where the display is actually flat, but instead, the outer glass is slightly curved. G Flex 2 actually has a curved P-OLED touch display that can be flexed; hence the name. The accompanying Corning Gorilla Glass 3 also gives it the scratch-resistance it needs, while keeping the display flexible. Opting for a more ‘mainstream’ size, it has reduced the diagonal screen size to 5.5 inches now, compared to the original’s 6-inch P-OLED panel. The display has been upgraded to have a 1080p resolution, meaning its display density is now at around 403 pixels per inch.

The curved body is not all gimmick, but actually has a function, as LG pointed out. It prevents the display being shattered when dropped, plus the flexible body allows it to be bent without breaking. The back of the device is made of the same self-healing polymer coating that could take light scratches and “heals” within seconds, compared to the original G Flex that takes minutes. It doesn’t actually heal like our skin does; but instead think of it as a soft polymer that absorbs impacts and indents, and could bounce back to its original form.

To run through other important specifications, much of the innards have been improved over the G Flex. G Flex 2 now has Category 6 LTE with theoretical downloads of up to 300Mbps (G Flex has Cat4 LTE). The rear and front cameras are still at 13 and 2.1 megapixels, but the former now has LG G3’s laser autofocus, that lets it take fast snapshots, and an optical image stabilization (OIS) construction, for blur-free images.

G Flex 2 now has two storage options — 16 and 32 GB — with 2 and 3 GB RAM respectively. Because of the smaller display, LG is also reducing the battery capacity to be a 3000mAh Li-Po, compared to the original’s 3500mAh Li-Po cell. They’re both not user-removable.

But perhaps the most compelling feature of the LG G Flex 2 is the top-notch processor it comes with. Currently, there are only a handful of Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processors on the market, and the G Flex 2 is one of them. The MSM8974 SoC is accompanied by an octa-core CPU (1.5GHz quad-core Cortex-A53 and 2GHz quad-core Cortex-A57) and a new Adreno 430 GPU.

Besides your usual high-end connectivity like WiFi 802.11ac dual-band, GLONASS, and Bluetooth 4.1, it even has the good ol’ FM radio with RDS. It also ships with Android 5.0.1 Lollipop, with enhancements from LG like the ‘Knock Code’ unlocking feature.

LG G Flex 2 is said to have been shipped in South Korea in late January 2015 for KRW800,000 (~MYR2595). LG Malaysia went on a hiatus until recently, when it brought in the G3 and the G3 Stylus. Older devices like the original G Flex and Nexus 5 will never be officially released here, and it is still unclear when (if ever) will we see the G Flex 2 on sale in Malaysia.
